What London’s recent outages can teach us about true network resilience

Organisations of all kinds depend on the very highest level of resilience from their networks and typically cultivate robust cyber security ecosystems in order to maintain this. However, while securing critical infrastructure against bad actors is certainly essential, it's not the only aspect of resilience that must be given careful consideration.

Consider the widely reported incident in London on the 26th November 2025, where a fire in an underground utilities tunnel in Holborn required the intervention of seventy firefighters. This not only resulted in serious disruptions to traffic, but left numerous businesses completely without connectivity for more than twenty-four hours. Throughout this period, those affected were unable to trade or even communicate with their colleagues at other sites.

This was not the first time the area had been affected in this way. In April 2015, an electrical fire left numerous businesses still experiencing connection problems more than a week later, with providers' own engineers unable to access the affected areas until the blaze had been contained.

At a time when even the smallest instances of downtime can have serious operational, financial, and reputational consequences, it is essential that business have contingency plans in place to restore their connectivity in the event of 'acts of God' like this. While it's certainly impossible to be fully prepared for any eventuality, there are measures you can take to optimise the overall resilience of your network, and ensure any downtime is kept to the absolute minimum should an outage occur.

As a baseline, a truly resilient network should incorporate:

  • Fibre routes that take separate paths
  • Independent building entry points for each circuit
  • Redundant hardware, so individual component failures cannot take services offline

It is for this reason that EXPO.e Networks has deployed our own fibre under the streets of London and continues to develop our self-owned network in response to our customers' evolving requirements. Our network forms the bedrock of our entire range of managed IT services, and so is designed with optimal resilience in mind.

If you're concerned about the resilience of your own connectivity, just get in touch.
